Attention Servicemember

Ben Brody’s book Attention Servicemember documented the U.S. invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Brody initially enlisted in the Iraq War as a propaganda photographer. The first section of the book presents Brody’s body of work created while deployed — much of which was never published in state or media outlets. The section additionally includes written reflections about his life in Iraq and the ways in which press photography has shaped public opinion about the U.S. occupation.

The second part of Brody’s book comprises photographs Brody made in Afghanistan after discharging and taking up independent documentary work. Brody’s account is deeply personal, providing a critical perspective about Bush’s Global War on Terror that is distinct from those often made available to the American public.
