Ephemeral

Ephemeral, Stephanie Ayala’s debut book, is a meditation on memory and photography. Ayala weaves together self-portraits with photographs of family, childhood and the natural world. All of these things, Ayala reminds us, are constantly in flux and must transform over time. Ephemeral comes with a poster on handmade paper that complements the book’s feeling of impermanence. The paper is embedded with seeds, among them: chamomile, daisy, thyme and poppy. Plant the paper in the ground and it will degrade, but a small garden will grow in its place.
