Presence: The Invisible Portrait

Chris Buck’s Presence is a book of celebrity portraits. It’s just that we can’t see them. Buck, whose career straddles the conceptual and the commercial, convinced fifty public figures to have their portrait taken, but hide from sight somewhere in the frame. Paired with each invisible portrait is a signed witness statement affirming the sitter’s being in the shoot. Page after page, we’re quietly hoping to find some piece of the sitter peeking out, proving these figures are really there.
