South Central is one of a trilogy originally published between 2007-2009 and re-released in 2020.
South Central comprises mostly portraiture — people caught between moments of their daily lives, appearing at times suspicious, lost in thought, or dispassionate toward the camera. The book is both prosaic and extraordinary, and beautifully printed by Nazraeli Press.
South Central, along with South East and Greater Atlanta, all come out of Steinmetz’s explorations of the south, where he continues to work and live today. Steinmetz is originally from New York City, but after one semester of his Yale MFA program, he dropped out and moved to LA in search of Garry Winogrand. He moved further south to Athens, Georgia the following decade.
